HONG KONG (2019) – Joyce Anne C. De Guzman, a 40-year-old Filipino woman, has worked in Hong Kong as a domestic helper for more than one year. Joyce said she decided to work in Hong Kong to secure a stable financial future for her children.
She said her employers are very strict with how she spends her free time and tight with her food allowance.
“Time is gold and it is very hard to work abroad,” she said. “You need to be brave, be strong and be patient. Especially for the employer.”
During her free Sundays, Joyce said she can relieve some of her stress with family video chats, singing in church, and attending birthday celebrations with friends.
Although she feels at times with no sense of belonging in Hong Kong, Joyce still wants to continue working in the city so that she can raise enough money for her restaurant again and support her family.
