HONG KONG (2019) – Leaving Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, to fulfill the promise to take care of her parents and save money for her wedding, Louisa Dadulla has lived and worked in Hong Kong as a domestic helper for more than three years.
The 29-year-old woman, who is the youngest in her family, has eight siblings. Louisa used to work as a customer representative and as an office clerk in the Philippines.
“I wasted my time studying and going here just to be a domestic helper,” Louisa said. “But on the other side, working here gives me more salary.”
She has already finished one contract in Hong Kong, she said, and has been able to buy her own house in the Philippines.
Because of the long-distance relationship with her boyfriend, Louisa said she will eventually give up her job in Hong Kong and settle down in the Philippines. For the future, she dreams of a simple life running her own business and living with her parents.
