HONG KONG (2019) – Angelica Trono Apawan started working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong in September 2019. Because she is the oldest sibling in her family, Angelica said she has to work to financially help support her family. At 29, Angelica is the mother of a 10-year-old daughter, struggling to walk and talk due to cerebral palsy.
Angelica, who lives with her Hong Kong employer, said she sends most of her monthly salary for her daughter’s therapy and medicine, and to support her family in Iloilo City, the Philippines. Of the HK$4,520 she earns monthly, she said she keeps HK$700 for herself.
Although Angelica has faced and is still facing many difficulties, she said she still has passion and a positive attitude towards life. “Believe in yourself,” she often says to herself.
She plans to work in Hong Kong four to six years, during which she would like to visit Disneyland in Hong Kong with her daughter. Angelica hopes to save enough money eventually to return to the Philippines and open a small supermarket.
